I mean, he's a good driver and all, but I have a feeling (given his criticisms with Red Bull's chassis this year) that he might be there to leak aero and engineering secrets to Ferrari. Are drivers under strict NDAs as part of their contracts, and would it expire after his switch?

How much engineering do the drivers really know?

Lauda was pretty savvy, or so the movie Rush told me. These days? Probably not so much.

Not much, but I bet the logistics, such as their schedules, organizational structure, lines of communication, where control is centered, major decisions, etc. are all something he would have been involved with.

I believe Lauda was more along the lines of knowing how far, very precisely, you could strip down and make a car faster before it got too dangerous. Back in the 70s, F1 tech wasn't really much further ahead than most cars, they just had it done on very dangerous margins. It was advanced composites (Carbon Fiber), aero and turbos that put F1 cars in the realm of space-age, and those weren't around until the 80s.

driver's insight is key.... maybe to a small extent

Exactly, I don't think Vettel is thinking about the nose profile and how that interacts aerodynamics affecting how much CFM of air is hitting the radiators etc.

What's "Carbin Fiber"?

Makes me wonder if they had him test the new F14T and he liked it. From what I've seen, showing him a decent car that he prefers (or a willingness to work with it, as Red Bull seems to be giving him the shaft of "well, it's good the way it is, even if you don't like it" so far) could go a long way. I don't think the money is the concern, I think he wants to be Schumacher, and that means he wants to win .

A new super-secret prototype material made from recycled Holly 4-barrels.

very true. He is a crazy good driver. Even this season with his on/off battles with the Ferrari. We'll see. Vettle as the new Shumi is very possible. The competition is great tho

I'm sure Vettel doesn't know the first thing about the high level designs of the cars he drives. One simply couldn't be an expert in aerodynamics, mechanical engineering, vehicle dynamics, etc, etc, AND be a world class race car driver. There isn't enough time in a person's first 25(?) years of life.

I meant more in terms of the team design, organization, and how they optimize over a season. I wouldn't imagine Vettel is either the type to just jump into whatever Adrian Newey gives him without some feedback or knowledge about what they changed.

I don't think Vettel is in the meetings about rake angle of the rear diffuser and how that works with tramsmission clearance or what is the best NACA profile for the suspension arms. Sure he can say one has better turn in or mid corner grip or high speed balance which is no doubt helpful but that information can't directly translate to making a faster car.
